THE Catholic Church in Ghana has taken a decisive step in the fight against climate change, unveiling its first solar-powered system at Christ the King Church in Accra.
The landmark project, commissioned on March 25 by Archbishop John Bonaventure Kwofie of Accra, signals the start of a nationwide rollout across Catholic institutions.
Installed by Lumen Energy, the system will provide reliable, cost-effective power while reducing dependence on the national grid.
Bishop Gabriel Edoe Kumordji of Keta-Akatsi described the initiative as “transformational”, linking it directly to Pope Francis’ environmental call in Laudato Si’.
“This is the Church leading by example,” he said.
The system combines solar panels, batteries, and grid support—ensuring round-the-clock energy while lowering costs.
Church leaders say the move is both ecological and economic, freeing up power for industry and reducing long-term expenses.
Plans are underway to expand the project nationwide, with calls for other institutions to follow suit.
